Morzine to Avoriaz by cable-car: plans announced

Big expansion plans have been announced for the Portes du Soleil ski area, with plans for a cable car to connect Morzine to Avoriaz – allowing skiers to travel effortlessly across the valley and the town of Morzine, rather than the often tiresome process of having to come down from Morzine, work or take the navette across town, and then take the chairlift up to Avoriaz, and vice versa.

At a town council public meeting, a formal presentation of the new lift development connecting Morzine and Avoriaz was announced.

The Mayor has expressed his desire to better connect the two resorts for a number of years, and as far back as 2009 there were rumours of a new telepherique.

The new lift development plan is called “Project Morzine Avoriaz 2020”, with tentative plans for construction to begin in 2019 with completions scheduled for 2021.

The budget for the development is €35 million, with a further €11.6 million to be spent on surrounding infrastructure.

The base station will be located at the top of the Rue du Bourg, opposite the opticians and to the right of the current Odlo shop. Beneath the new lift station in the area known as La Plan (the current Carrefour carpark) will be a new bus station.

Though the plans have now been announced, those behind the project are cautioning that there are likely to be many legal objections which could delay construction.
